Home Automation Gadgets That Will Change the Way You Live

Nest Thermostat

The Nest is one of the most highly-anticipated and popular devices to enter the home automation niche to date. The device is an intelligent and programmable thermostat that can be tailored to the needs of household residents' lifestyles. It can be conveniently set to correlate with the changing temperature patterns of those in the house.

It teaches itself the users' schedules over time and automatically adjusts to match personal preferences when residents enter the home. It can also be controlled via smartphone when no one is home to prevent unnecessary use of heating or air conditioning. The device starts at around $250, and its cutting edge technology allows homeowners to save up to 20 percent on their heating and cooling costs. Here are some pros and cons of the Nest Thermostat.

Chui Smart Doorbell

The Chui lets residents communicate with visitors without having to meet them. Users can talk via a mobile app, or leave a pre-recorded message. This comes in handy for delivery personnel or other visitors who do not need to enter the home. The device can identify the visitor and play the specific message meant for them. For unwanted visitors, Chui can disregard their ring without alerting the homeowner to their presence. The device can be pre-ordered for about $200.

August Smart Lock

The Smart Lock is a digital locking system that keeps the home secure while also making entrance much easier. As it is digital, no keys are required for access because the device is controlled via smartphone. This technology allows the door to be locked even when residents aren't home, which can be useful when letting relatives or service workers enter. It also lets residents check the status of the lock to make sure the home is secure after they've left. The system keeps a record of all users that have gone in and out of the home, allowing full-time access for residents, or scheduled access for help such as maids, nannies or assistants. The keyless locking system can be purchased for $250.

Goldee Light Controller

The Goldee Home Pack is a light controller than can be operated via smartphone. It caters to the user's schedule to turn the lights on or off upon exit or entry, and gradually adjusts room light for a more natural effect, similar to the sun rising and setting. It will slowly dim the lights at night so the user can adjust to darkness as they fall asleep. It can also be set to follow the same pattern, even when users are out of town, providing an effective deterrent for would-be intruders. A full home set up may cost $1700, but it can be installed in one room for $550.
